I’m Iain Poulson, Founder of Plugin Rank
I’m a WordPress developer and business owner based in England, with over 12 years developer experience and in the WordPress business since 2011. Over 30,000 websites have used my WordPress plugins.
As a developer, I have worked with some of the biggest WordPress plugin businesses around, like Delicious Brains (the makers of WP Migrate DB Pro and SpinupWP) and Saturday Drive (the makers of Ninja Forms).
I enjoy blogging and talking about WordPress (I co-host the Pressing Matters podcast), as well as organizing my local WordPress meetup.
I love being part of the WordPress community ❤️
The Story behind Plugin Rank
“I remember when this was all farmland as far as the eye could see”
When I released my first free WordPress plugin on the WordPress plugin directory back in 2012, the WordPress plugin ecosystem was a lot smaller. There were much fewer plugins of the same type and it was a lot easier to gain traction and get installs.
After acquiring WP User Manager in 2019, I worked on improving the copy in the readme.txt to surface the plugin higher in search results. WP User Manager is a free plugin with paid addons, so the revenue is directly related to the number of installs of the free plugin. Appearing higher in WordPress plugin directory search results is a great way to increase the amount of users installing the plugin.
But making actionable changes to achieve a goal is made a lot harder if you don’t monitor the results of your work. How do you know if your plugin is ranking higher after you have made changes to the readme? Check the search results manually? Remember to do this regularly? There’s a better way, and it’s Plugin Rank.
